Authorities in St. Tammany Parish are investigating a tragic hit-and-run incident that claimed the life of a young cyclist early Sunday morning.
According to Louisiana State Police (LSP), the victim has been identified as 24-year-old Rodrigo Ornelas Jr. of Folsom. Officials say the incident occurred along LA Highway 40 near Blackwell Cemetery Road during the early hours, in an area described as having limited lighting.
Preliminary reports indicate that Ornelas Jr. was riding his bicycle eastbound when he was struck from behind by a vehicle traveling in the same direction. The vehicle, believed to be a dark-colored sedan or small SUV, left the scene immediately after the collision.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene and provided medical assistance before transporting the injured cyclist to a nearby hospital. Despite efforts to save him, he later passed away from his injuries.
Investigators noted that the bicycle was equipped with reflectors but did not have active lights at the time of the incident. Authorities also confirmed that a routine toxicology test has been conducted as part of standard procedure in such cases.
Law enforcement officials are actively working to identify both the vehicle and the driver involved. They are reviewing available evidence and following leads in an effort to piece together the circumstances surrounding the crash.
The incident has raised renewed concerns about road safety, particularly in areas with low visibility during nighttime and early morning hours. Officials are reminding both motorists and cyclists to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions, including using proper lighting and safety gear.
Authorities are urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has relevant information to come forward. Even the smallest detail could assist investigators in locating the vehicle involved and understanding what occurred.
The investigation remains ongoing, and officials say updates will be shared as more information becomes available.
