Authorities in Jackson County Courthouse have identified the suspect involved in a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred on Thursday during a law enforcement response at the courthouse.

The Jackson County Coroner’s Office confirmed that the individual was a 59-year-old man from North Carolina. Officials stated that he was pronounced dead at the scene following the incident.

According to preliminary information released by investigators, the situation began when the suspect drove a vehicle through a perimeter fence near the courthouse grounds and positioned it close to a large propane storage area. Authorities reported that he also created a dangerous situation involving propane tanks inside his vehicle, prompting an urgent law enforcement response.

Law enforcement agencies, including federal, state, and local partners, are jointly investigating the circumstances surrounding the event. Officials have emphasized that the response was carried out after a rapidly escalating situation that posed a serious public safety concern in the area.

When deputies from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office arrived at the scene, the suspect fled on foot, leading to a pursuit. During the encounter that followed, an officer-involved shooting occurred, and the suspect was fatally injured. Authorities confirmed that no deputies or responding officers were harmed during the incident.

Officials have not released additional details regarding the suspect’s background or possible motives, noting that the investigation is still in its early stages. They have also stated that multiple agencies are working together to review evidence, witness statements, and other relevant information.

An autopsy is scheduled to be conducted on April 21 as part of the ongoing inquiry. Authorities say further updates will be provided as the investigation continues and more verified information becomes available.
