The men’s basketball program has strengthened its roster with the commitment of 6-foot-5 shooting guard Bruno Van Bewer, regarded as one of the top offensive players in Manitoba.

A standout from College Jeanne-Sauvé, Van Bewer captained his high school team and delivered strong all-around performances. He averaged 20 points per game, along with eight rebounds and seven assists per outing. His consistent production earned him SCAC All-Star recognition from 2022 through 2026 and a ranking among Manitoba’s top prospects, where he was placed ninth by the Winnipeg Free Press.

His basketball résumé also includes a strong performance at the 2025 Canada Games, where he played a key role for Team Manitoba. He further sharpened his skills with 204 Elite, competing against some of the best young players across Canada and gaining valuable high-level experience.

Head coach Kirby Schepp welcomed the addition, highlighting Van Bewer’s scoring ability, athleticism, and shooting range as key strengths that will translate well to university competition. He also noted his leadership qualities and experience in major competitions as important assets for the team’s future.

Beyond basketball, Van Bewer has also excelled academically, maintaining an honour roll average of about 85 percent. He is proud of his identity as a Red River Métis and Francophone athlete, reflecting his cultural background both on and off the court.

Looking back on his journey, Van Bewer said that attending university basketball games as a young fan inspired his dream of playing at the next level. Now, he has the opportunity to stay close to home and compete in front of family and friends as he begins his university basketball career.
