Authorities are investigating a fatal motorcycle crash in Charles County, Maryland, that left one man dead and another injured late Wednesday evening.
The victim has been identified as 36-year-old Patrick Murphy Jr. of Waldorf. He was operating a Yamaha motorcycle at the time of the collision, according to the Maryland State Police.
The crash occurred on April 30, 2026, at approximately 9:16 p.m. when troopers from the La Plata Barrack responded to the intersection of Maryland Route 228 and Mill Hill Road following reports of a serious traffic incident involving a motorcycle.
Preliminary findings suggest that a Ford Explorer, driven by a 69-year-old man, was attempting to turn left from westbound Route 228 onto Mill Hill Road when the motorcycle collided with the vehicle. Investigators noted that the circumstances leading up to the crash are still being reviewed, and no final determination has been made regarding fault.
Authorities said the driver of the Ford Explorer sustained injuries and was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Investigators believe speed may have been a contributing factor, though they emphasized that the crash remains under active review.
Following the collision, both directions of the roadway were closed for more than three hours as investigators documented the scene and cleared debris. Assistance was provided by the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration and the Charles County Sheriff’s Office.
Officials continue to stress roadway safety for both drivers and motorcyclists, urging all road users to remain alert, reduce speed, and avoid distractions. Safety reminders also highlight the importance of visibility and protective gear for motorcyclists.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine the full sequence of events that led to the crash.
