A woman who lost her life after being struck while crossing a busy roadway in Tuscaloosa has been officially identified by authorities, as investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Police confirmed the victim as 67-year-old Althea Leanette Shelton of Tuscaloosa. Her identity was released following notification of her family.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday morning along Skyland Boulevard, in the area near a U-Haul Moving & Storage facility and a Take 5 Car Wash. According to preliminary information from law enforcement, Shelton was crossing the roadway shortly after 2 a.m. when she was hit by a vehicle traveling westbound.
Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene, but despite their efforts, Shelton sustained critical injuries and was pronounced dead at the location of the crash.
Authorities have not yet released additional details about the driver involved or whether any charges are being considered. The Tuscaloosa Police Department’s Traffic Homicide Unit responded to the scene and has taken over the investigation, as is standard procedure in serious roadway fatalities.
Investigators are currently working to determine the factors that led to the collision, including visibility conditions, roadway activity at the time, and other potential contributing circumstances. No further information has been provided regarding the vehicle involved.
