Authorities in Stockton have identified a man who died following an early morning roadway incident along Interstate 5, as investigators continue to search for answers.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident was reported at approximately 4:35 a.m. on April 16 on the northbound side of Interstate 5, just north of French Camp Road. Officers responded to reports involving a pedestrian on the freeway.

Preliminary findings indicate that the individual was pushing a shopping cart along the roadway when he came into contact with a vehicle. Authorities stated that the vehicle involved did not remain at the scene, and investigators are working to identify it.

The San Joaquin County Medical Examiner’s Office later identified the individual as Christopher George Funk Jr., a 44-year-old resident of Stockton.

Officials reported that, following the initial impact, additional vehicles may have been involved as traffic continued along the freeway. Emergency personnel arrived shortly after the incident was reported and confirmed that the man died at the scene.

The circumstances surrounding how the pedestrian came to be on the freeway remain under investigation. Authorities are reviewing available evidence and appealing to the public for any information that could assist in identifying the vehicle or vehicles involved.

Traffic in the area was affected for a period of time as crews worked to secure the scene and ensure the safety of other motorists.
