Pearl Fryar, a self-taught garden artist whose creativity transformed a simple South Carolina property into a globally admired landmark, has passed away at the age of 86. He died peacefully on April 4 at his home in Bishopville, according to his wife, Metra Fryar.
Mr. Fryar’s journey began with a modest goal. After he and his wife purchased their first home in Lee County in 1980, he set out to beautify the yard and hoped to earn a local “Yard of the Month” recognition. Although he was initially told he did not qualify, that moment sparked a determination that would shape his life’s work.
With little formal training, Mr. Fryar began experimenting with plants, often rescuing discarded shrubs from a nearby nursery. What started as a simple effort soon evolved into something extraordinary. Through patience, imagination, and dedication, he carefully shaped trees and bushes into striking, artistic forms that captured attention far beyond his hometown.
Balancing his full-time job as a production engineer, he devoted countless evenings to his garden, working late into the night. Over time, his creations grew in scale and complexity, reflecting both his artistic vision and his perseverance.
His efforts eventually earned recognition, including the very local award he once sought. More importantly, his garden became a source of pride for the community, drawing visitors from across the world and inspiring many with his story of determination and creativity.
