Rachel Burkhart Layton, 93, of Lexington, North Carolina, passed away on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, at her daughter’s home, surrounded by her loving family. Her passing was peaceful and filled with love, as she was embraced by those closest to her.
Born on March 6, 1933, in Davidson County, she was the daughter of the late Glenn Wilson Burkhart and Regina Walker Burkhart. Rachel was a devoted member of Second Reformed Church and spent part of her working life at Lexington Furniture in the Table Plant, where she was known for her dedication and strong work ethic.
She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who always placed family at the center of her life. Rachel enjoyed tending to her flower beds, spending meaningful time with her loved ones, and making cherished memories on family beach vacations whenever her health allowed.
She was preceded in passing by her parents, her beloved husband of 70 years, Donald “Don” Layton, and her brothers Harold G. Burkhart and Lindsay Paul Burkhart.
She is survived by her daughter, Susan Vanzant (Ricky Sr.) of Lexington; her son, Donnie Layton (Lora) of Wallburg; her sister, Jane Burkhart of Lexington; four grandchildren, Chris Beck (Leah), Ricky Vanzant Jr. (Dawn), Adam Layton, and Page Flannery (Dylan); and four great-grandchildren, Rachel Beck, Haley Vanzant, Caroline Vanzant, and Adelle Layton.
The family expresses heartfelt appreciation to the Hospice of Davidson County staff for their compassionate care and support during her final days. In honor of her life, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Davidson County, 200 Hospice Way, Lexington, NC 27292.
Her memory will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her, as her life reflected kindness, faith, and unwavering devotion to family and community. She will be deeply missed always forever.
