Man Dies in North Austin Hit-and-Run, Authorities Seek Suspect

Austin police have identified the man who died in a pedestrian-vehicle crash in North Austin on Wednesday afternoon.

According to the Austin Police Department, the incident occurred just before 2:30 p.m. on April 1 at the intersection of North Lamar Boulevard and Rutland Drive. Officers responding to the scene reported that the vehicle involved had fled before authorities arrived.

The pedestrian, identified as 40-year-old Mario Alfonso Garcia Gonzalez, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police confirmed that Gonzalez’s decease marks Austin’s 20th fatal crash of the year, resulting in 20 deaths. For comparison, by this date in 2025, the city recorded 21 fatal crashes with 25 fatalities.

Authorities are urging anyone with information about the crash or the suspect vehicle to contact APD’s Vehicular Homicide Unit.

Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. They have not released additional details about the suspect or vehicle involved.
