SALT LAKE CITY — Authorities in Salt Lake City are investigating a deadly incident that occurred Wednesday evening outside a local church, where a memorial service was taking place at the time. Police confirmed that two adults lost their lives and six others were injured during the incident, which happened in a parking area behind the building.
According to the Salt Lake City Police Department, officers were alerted shortly after 7:30 p.m. following reports of an emergency at a meetinghouse operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Many people were gathered inside the church attending a remembrance event when the situation unfolded outside.
Police officials said eight adults were affected in total. Two of the individuals later died from their injuries, while others were transported to medical facilities for treatment. Some of those injured arrived at hospitals by private means, which initially made it more difficult for authorities to quickly confirm the condition of everyone involved. At the time of the update, several people were listed in serious condition, while others were still being evaluated.
Investigators believe the individual responsible left the area before officers arrived. Later in the evening, law enforcement was seen detaining at least one person as part of the broader response. Police clarified that those detained were not immediately considered suspects, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Salt Lake City Police Chief Brian Redd stated that all of the victims were adults. He added that officers were reviewing available security footage from nearby locations and gathering information from witnesses in the surrounding area. Authorities have not determined whether the incident was connected to organized criminal activity and said it was too early to draw conclusions.
Police emphasized that there is no indication the incident was motivated by hostility toward a particular religion. Officials also stated they do not believe the event was random, though further details have not yet been released. Investigators are continuing to work carefully to understand what led to the situation.
Members of the surrounding community responded quickly after the incident, offering assistance and comfort to those affected. The memorial service inside the church was for an individual whose identity has not been made public, and many attendees were understandably shaken by the events.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints released a brief statement confirming its cooperation with law enforcement.
