Authorities have identified the man shot and pronounced dead by a Virginia state trooper following a violent incident on Interstate 495 as 32-year-old Jared Llamado of McLean. According to Virginia State Police, troopers responded around 1:20 p.m. Sunday to a crash on southbound I-495 near Exit 52 in Fairfax County.
Police said that following the crash, Llamado allegedly stabbed a 39-year-old woman, identified as Michele Adams, who later died. Three other individuals sustained serious injuries and were transported to local hospitals. Authorities stated that none of the victims were passengers in Llamado’s vehicle. Police also reported that a dog at the scene was killed during the altercation.
According to investigators, when a state trooper arrived, Llamado approached while holding a knife. Police said the trooper discharged his weapon in self-defense. The trooper was not injured and has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure. The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation is leading the review of the shooting.
A spokesperson for the United States Department of State confirmed that Llamado was employed as a Foreign Service Officer and extended condolences to those affected.
Authorities have not released further details regarding what led to the initial crash or the subsequent altercation. The incident caused significant traffic delays, with southbound lanes temporarily closed for several hours.
