Tragic Domestic Incident Ends in Fatal Standoff with Georgia Deputies
Eric Grigsby Obituary, Death – A domestic incident in Midland, Georgia, escalated into a deadly confrontation on Monday night, resulting in a man being fatally shot by law enforcement officers after he allegedly murdered two of his teenage stepchildren. The events unfolded around 7 p.m. in the town, located approximately 106 miles south of Atlanta.
The sequence of events began when the wife of 50-year-old Eric Grigsby managed to escape their home. She sought refuge at a neighbor’s residence, bringing her 5-year-old child with her, and immediately notified authorities that Grigsby had threatened to kill her children.
Upon arrival, deputies encountered Grigsby, who was armed with two handguns. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) reported that the officers repeatedly ordered Grigsby to drop the weapons. Instead of complying, Grigsby advanced toward the law enforcement personnel, pointing the handguns directly at them.
In response to the immediate threat, the deputies discharged their firearms. Grigsby was struck by this initial round, prompting him to fire back at the officers. The deputies continued to fire until Grigsby was incapacitated and fell to the ground. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Fortunately, no deputies sustained injuries during the exchange of gunfire.
Following the termination of the threat, deputies entered the residence and discovered the two teenage stepchildren had been shot. Grigsby’s 16-year-old stepson was pronounced dead at the scene. Emergency medical personnel attempted life-saving measures on the 14-year-old stepson, who had also been shot, but he tragically succumbed to his injuries.
Harris County Sheriff Mike Jolley released a statement commending his personnel, asserting that the deputies “responded to the scene and did exactly as they were trained.”
As is standard protocol in officer-involved shootings, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation has taken over the investigation into the incident. Once the GBI completes its full review of the case, it will be turned over to the Chattahoochee Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for an independent review and determination. This tragic event marks the 72nd officer-involved shooting the GBI has been requested to investigate within the current year, following a previous deadly incident that occurred in Crisp County on November 7th. The investigation seeks to establish all facts surrounding the domestic violence, the deaths of the two teenagers, and the fatal encounter between Eric Grigsby and the law enforcement deputies.
