LEXINGTON, Ky.

Corporal Blake Reynolds – Authorities in Delaware County are mourning the loss of a sheriff’s deputy who died in a crash on Interstate 69 early Wednesday morning. The incident occurred near the 247 mile-marker, close to Gaston, around 3:45 a.m., according to the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office.

Preliminary information indicates that Corporal Blake Reynolds, a four-year veteran of the sheriff’s office, was assisting a stranded driver when his patrol car was struck by a northbound semi-trailer. The Indiana State Police (ISP) confirmed that Reynolds was outside his vehicle providing protection for the disabled semi when a second northbound semi lost control and collided with both the patrol car and the stranded truck. Reynolds was transported to IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie, where he was pronounced dead. The driver of the striking semi was taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis and is undergoing surgery.

“This is a heartbreaking loss for our law enforcement family and for the entire Delaware County community,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement. Officials expressed gratitude for the public support and prayers, as well as the assistance provided by multiple responding agencies.

Reynolds had joined the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office in 2022 after serving in the Army National Guard. During his time at the department, he earned a reputation for professionalism, leadership, and dedication, culminating in his promotion to corporal. He was known for his commitment to public service and his compassion for the community he served. In June 2025, Reynolds had married his wife, making his passing a profound loss for his family, colleagues, and the wider community.

Indiana State Police Sgt. Scott Keegan explained that Reynolds had responded around 3:30 a.m. to a report of a disabled semi partially blocking the roadway. While the deputy was safeguarding the vehicle and its driver, the second semi lost control, striking both vehicles and resulting in the fatal crash.

The Indiana Department of Transportation reported that northbound traffic on I-69 was diverted off at Indiana 28 (245 mile-marker) to accommodate emergency response and investigation efforts.

Statements from Indiana leaders and first responder agencies reflected the deep sense of loss and solidarity following Reynolds’ death. Governor Mike Braun described the news as “deeply saddening” and offered prayers for Reynolds’ family and all law enforcement officers in the state.

Several local and regional agencies also expressed condolences. The Chesterfield Police Department urged residents to keep the Delaware County Sheriff’s Department in their thoughts, acknowledging the difficulty of processing such a tragic loss. Yorktown Fire Department, Eaton Volunteer Fire Department, Marion Police Department, and Gaston Volunteer Fire/EMS Department similarly shared messages honoring Reynolds’ service and expressing sympathy for his family and colleagues.

Reynolds’ colleagues described him as a dedicated law enforcement officer who consistently prioritized helping others. His service exemplified the values of courage, responsibility, and community engagement, leaving a lasting impact on those who knew him personally and professionally.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances of the crash to determine contributing factors and provide a complete account of the events. Officials emphasized the importance of public patience as they work through the investigation and gather all relevant information.

The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office highlighted that Reynolds’ passing is a tremendous loss to his family, the law enforcement community, and the public he faithfully served. “His unwavering dedication to duty and his willingness to help others will not be forgotten,” the sheriff’s office said.

As the investigation progresses, Delaware County and surrounding communities are uniting in grief and remembrance, honoring the sacrifice and service of Corporal Blake Reynolds. Vigils, statements, and public support continue to reflect the profound respect for a deputy who lost his life while performing his duties and assisting others in need.
