Mary Dubbert Obituary, Death Cause – Authorities in north-central Kansas are investigating a tragic crash in Mitchell County that claimed the life of an elderly woman late Tuesday morning. The incident took place on K-181 Highway, just south of Timothy Trail, approximately four miles south of Tipton, according to officials from the Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP).
The crash was reported around 11:21 a.m. on Tuesday. Preliminary findings from the KHP indicate that a 1991 Buick Century was heading north on K-181 when it attempted to pass a 2005 International semitrailer in an area where passing was not allowed. At the same time, investigators say the semi, while negotiating a curve, veered across the center line and failed to stay fully within its lane.
In an effort to avoid a collision, the driver of the Buick moved off the roadway but lost control while attempting to re-enter the highway. The vehicle then struck the side of the semi. The impact caused the semitrailer to leave the road and roll into a ditch on the east side of the highway.
Tragically, a passenger in the semi, identified as 84-year-old Mary Dubbert of Tipton, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Authorities say she had been riding in the passenger seat at the time of the crash.
The driver of the semitrailer, 52-year-old Ronald Dubbert of Hebron, Nebraska, was seriously injured and transported by emergency responders to Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit for treatment. Officials said that both individuals in the semi had been wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash.
The driver of the Buick, 69-year-old Brian Christianson of Hunter, Kansas, was not injured, according to the KHP report. He was also wearing his seat belt.
The accident resulted in the temporary closure of a portion of K-181 as emergency personnel and investigators worked to clear the roadway and document the scene. Local law enforcement, firefighters, and medical responders assisted in the rescue and recovery efforts.
The Kansas Highway Patrol continues to investigate the exact cause of the crash, including the sequence of movements that led to the vehicles colliding. Investigators will be reviewing physical evidence, road markings, and vehicle damage to determine how each driver’s actions contributed to the incident. Weather and road conditions at the time of the crash will also be evaluated as part of the ongoing investigation.
