Drace Johnson Obituary, Death – A community in Pickaway County is mourning the loss of a 16-year-old Circleville High School student who died following a weekend crash. The Pickaway County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the victim, identified as Drace Johnson, succumbed to his injuries on Monday after being involved in a serious accident late Saturday night.
The crash occurred around 11:15 p.m. on Saturday in the 12000 block of State Route 762 in Darby Township. According to investigators, a 17-year-old male was behind the wheel of a 2003 Ford F-250 pickup truck, traveling northwest on Route 762. Three other teenagers were riding in the vehicle, including Johnson.
Officials said the truck struck a guardrail on the north side of the roadway. The driver then appeared to overcorrect, causing the vehicle to veer sharply across the road before coming to a stop against a nearby residence. The force of the crash left Johnson with severe injuries. He was initially transported to Mount Carmel Grove City and later transferred to Mount Carmel East, but despite efforts to save him, he passed away two days later.
The sheriff’s office reported that the driver of the truck was arrested at the scene for operating a vehicle while intoxicated. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether additional charges will be filed as the investigation continues. The tragic circumstances surrounding the crash have raised concerns about underage drinking and driving, highlighting once again the devastating consequences such choices can have.
Johnson, a junior at Circleville High School, was remembered as a beloved student and athlete. He was a member of the school’s wrestling team and also attended Pickaway Ross Career and Technology Center. Superintendent Kimberly Halley released a heartfelt letter to families, calling the loss “an immeasurable sorrow.” She expressed condolences on behalf of the district, noting that Johnson was well known and loved within the school community.
“The passing of one of our Tigers is an immeasurable sorrow. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends, and all who are grieving,” Halley wrote. She also emphasized the importance of unity and compassion during this difficult time. To support grieving students and staff, Circleville Schools announced that grief counselors would be available at the high school to provide assistance.
Neighbors near the crash site expressed shock at the accident, noting the quiet nature of the rural area where it occurred. The sheriff’s office has confirmed that the investigation is still active, with accident reconstruction specialists reviewing the circumstances that led up to the crash.
Meanwhile, Johnson’s death has left a deep void in both his school and his community. Students and staff are preparing to honor his memory while coming to terms with the sudden and heartbreaking loss of one of their own. For many, Johnson’s role on the wrestling team and his involvement in school activities made him a familiar face, and his absence will be profoundly felt.
The tragedy has also served as a painful reminder about the dangers of impaired driving, particularly among young and inexperienced drivers. Local officials and school leaders alike have urged the community to use this moment to reflect on the importance of making safe decisions, especially when behind the wheel.
As the Circleville community comes together in grief, the focus remains on supporting Johnson’s family, friends, and classmates. His life, though cut short, left a mark on those who knew him, and his memory will continue to be honored by the people who loved him most.
