Bryan Burris, New Palestine – Authorities in Hancock County are investigating a fatal traffic crash that occurred Monday afternoon, resulting in the death of a local man. The Indiana State Police, Indianapolis District, confirmed that officers responded to reports of a serious collision on U.S. 40 near the intersection with County Road 600 East, just east of Greenfield, around 1 p.m. on January 19.
When emergency responders arrived, they found two vehicles that had been severely damaged in the crash. One of the drivers, later identified as 43-year-old Bryan Burris of New Palestine, was unresponsive and pronounced dead at the scene. The loss has been met with sadness by family and the local community.
The other vehicle involved in the incident was carrying an adult and two children. Authorities reported that none of the occupants of that vehicle suffered serious injuries, though they were evaluated by emergency personnel and provided assistance at the scene.
Preliminary information from investigators indicates that Burris was driving a 2003 Honda southbound on County Road 600 East when the collision occurred. According to the initial review, the vehicle did not stop at a stop sign on U.S. 40, leading to a collision with a westbound Ford F250. Following the impact, Burris’ vehicle reportedly rolled over.
Emergency crews from multiple agencies responded to the scene to assist with the crash. The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office, Greenfield Police Department, Carthage Fire Department, Greenfield Fire Department, and the Hancock County Coroner’s Office all supported Indiana State Police in managing the response, securing the area, and providing medical care.
Authorities emphasized that the crash remains under investigation. Officials are reviewing all available evidence, including vehicle positions, roadway conditions, and witness accounts, to fully understand what happened. Additional details, including potential contributing factors, will be shared once the investigation is complete.
Community members have expressed concern and sadness following news of the crash. Many extended condolences to Burris’ family and friends, recognizing the sudden and tragic nature of traffic-related fatalities. Such incidents can have a lasting impact on families, neighbors, and those who travel regularly on the affected roadways.
Law enforcement agencies also reminded drivers of the importance of obeying traffic signals and remaining attentive at intersections. Authorities noted that collisions like this underscore the risks that can arise when safety rules are not followed and serve as a reminder for drivers to exercise caution on all roadways.
Investigators continue to review the crash scene and gather all relevant information before finalizing their findings. The Indiana State Police and supporting agencies have asked the public to respect the privacy of those involved while the investigation continues and to avoid speculation about the incident.
Officials said updates would be provided if new, verified information becomes available. The investigation aims to provide clarity regarding the circumstances of the crash and to help promote roadway safety in the community.
