A routine afternoon turned unsettling at a grocery store in Eugene after an unexpected incident left a shopper injured and prompted a swift response from law enforcement. According to the Eugene Police Department, officers were called to a Safeway location on East 18th Avenue around 3:52 p.m. on April 23 following reports of an altercation inside the store.
Authorities said a man in his 40s reported that he was approached by someone he did not know before being injured during the encounter. Emergency services arrived quickly, and the individual was transported to a nearby hospital. Officials confirmed that his injuries were not considered life-threatening.
Witnesses at the scene promptly contacted emergency services and provided officers with a description of the suspect, as well as the direction he had traveled after leaving the store. This information allowed responding officers to launch an immediate search of the surrounding area.
Within a short time, police located a suspect near West 17th Avenue and Mill Street. The individual, identified as 47-year-old Jason Troy Griner, was taken into custody without further incident. He was later booked into the Lane County Jail on a serious assault-related charge.
Investigators continue to review the circumstances surrounding the incident. Authorities have reassured the public that the situation was quickly contained and are encouraging anyone with additional information to come forward as inquiries continue.
