Axel Evarado Iquic-Sequen, Manuel Mateo Lopez Obituary, Death – Authorities in El Paso have identified two individuals who lost their lives following a crash that took place Sunday evening on Paisano Street in the city’s west side. The El Paso Police Department reported that officers were called to the scene at approximately 5:54 p.m. after receiving reports of a serious collision.
The individuals who passed away were identified as 30-year-old Axel Evarado Iquic-Sequen from Guatemala and 22-year-old Manuel Mateo Lopez from Mexico. Both were passengers in a vehicle that crashed during a police pursuit involving U.S. Border Patrol agents.
According to officials, the situation began when Border Patrol agents observed several people near the border wall who appeared to enter an Infiniti G37 sedan. When agents approached, the vehicle reportedly fled, prompting a pursuit along Paisano Drive. Authorities said the car made a U-turn and began heading west at a high rate of speed.
During the pursuit, investigators say the driver lost control of the vehicle while navigating a curve. The car struck a curb and a light pole, causing it to overturn. The impact was severe enough to cause significant damage to the vehicle. Emergency crews from the El Paso Fire Department and Police Department responded quickly to provide assistance.
Officials confirmed that there were seven people inside the vehicle at the time of the crash. Two of them, identified as Iquic-Sequen and Lopez, died at the scene. The remaining five occupants, including the driver, were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of injuries that ranged from minor to serious. The driver, described as an 18-year-old resident of El Paso, was among those hospitalized.
Police said the other passengers were also foreign nationals, with several reportedly from Guatemala and Honduras. Officials are working with federal agencies to confirm their identities and notify families.
The crash resulted in the temporary closure of sections of Paisano Street as law enforcement officers and crash reconstruction specialists examined the scene. Investigators documented evidence, collected debris, and took measurements to help determine the precise sequence of events. The roadway was later reopened to traffic after being cleared.
Authorities emphasized that the investigation remains active and involves both the El Paso Police Department’s Special Traffic Investigations unit and federal partners, including U.S. Border Patrol. The focus of the investigation is to establish the exact circumstances that led to the crash and to determine whether any additional factors—such as speed, mechanical issues, or road conditions—played a role.
Officials have not yet announced any charges in connection with the incident, stating that the case will be reviewed once the investigation is complete. The 18-year-old driver remains under medical care and is expected to recover.
The El Paso Police Department expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and said they are committed to conducting a full and transparent investigation. They also reminded the public about the dangers associated with high-speed pursuits and the importance of complying with law enforcement instructions to prevent tragic outcomes.
Local community members have reacted with sadness to the news, noting that the crash highlights the risks faced by people attempting to flee or evade law enforcement and the broader dangers of speeding on public roads. Safety advocates reiterated the importance of responsible driving and the need for cooperation between motorists and authorities to keep roadways safe for everyone.
As officials continue their investigation, they are working closely with federal agencies to ensure that all involved individuals receive proper care and that accurate information is shared with the affected families. Police said updates will be provided once more details are confirmed and the inquiry is complete.
The incident serves as a somber reminder of how quickly high-speed situations can turn deadly, and authorities continue to encourage drivers to make safe choices and remain calm during encounters with law enforcement.
