While much of the attention around the 2026 NFL Draft has centered on top quarterback names like Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza and Alabama’s Ty Simpson, analysts say the conversation may be overlooking another developing prospect with strong potential: North Dakota State’s Cole Payton.

Payton, a 6-foot-3, 232-pound left-handed quarterback, is gaining interest as a dual-threat playmaker known for both his passing ability and strong running skills. Though he spent most of his college career as a backup, he finally earned a starting role in 2025 and made the most of the opportunity.

In his lone season as a starter, Payton helped lead North Dakota State to a 12-1 record while completing 72% of his passes for 2,719 yards, 16 touchdowns, and just four interceptions. He also contributed heavily on the ground throughout his college career, showcasing his versatility and athleticism in designed rushing situations.

Speaking about his draft outlook, Payton noted that he is preparing for a potential selection on Day 2, which includes the second and third rounds, while acknowledging that evaluations vary widely across NFL teams. He described the experience as a lifelong dream and said he remains focused on staying ready for any opportunity.

North Dakota State has developed a reputation as a strong program for producing NFL-level quarterbacks, with several former players reaching the league in recent years. Payton hopes to continue that tradition, following the path of past Bison quarterbacks who have transitioned to professional football.

Despite his upside, analysts note that Payton’s limited starting experience could be a factor in evaluations. He attempted just 282 passes in college, significantly fewer than many other top quarterback prospects in the class. However, supporters believe his athletic profile and development potential could outweigh concerns about experience.

One NFL scout recently described him as one of the top dual-threat quarterbacks available, adding that while he may require development time at the next level, his tools and upside make him an interesting long-term project.

Payton, however, believes his journey has prepared him for the challenge. He emphasized that every player’s path is different and that he is focused on continuing to improve and maximize future opportunities as the draft approaches.
