GEORGETOWN COUNTY, South Carolina — Law enforcement agencies have identified the young man who died early Friday in an officer‑involved shooting in the Lowcountry. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is continuing its investigation into the incident, which occurred shortly before dawn at a hotel and gas station complex in Hardeeville.

The Jasper County Coroner’s Office confirmed the victim as 19‑year‑old Jayden Holloway‑Caldwell, a resident of Pawleys Island. Holloway‑Caldwell was visiting family in the Hardeeville area at the time of the incident, according to his relatives.

Officials say Hardeeville police responded to a report just after 4:30 a.m. Friday of a person attempting to break into vehicles parked outside the Super 8 motel on Whyte Hardee Boulevard. The call was first routed to local dispatchers before officers were sent to investigate.

Investigators say that while responding to the report, officers encountered a person matching the description given in the initial call in the parking lot of a nearby Shell gas station. A confrontation between officers and the man followed, and there was an exchange of gunfire.

Both Holloway‑Caldwell and a Hardeeville police officer were shot and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Law enforcement later confirmed that the officer survived and is expected to recover. Holloway‑Caldwell was pronounced dead at the hospital from his injuries.

Family members of Holloway‑Caldwell spoke publicly about their loss, describing him as a caring young man who looked out for those close to him. His mother, Jane’vanna Holloway, said her son had a “big heart” and always made sure people around him were okay. His grandmother shared that he often checked on her and made sure she was safe and well cared for. Holloway‑Caldwell’s sister said the family is grieving and wants the community to remember him as a son and brother, not just as a news report.

Officials have not yet released additional details about what led up to the shooting or whether charges will be filed. SLED, which routinely investigates officer‑involved shootings in South Carolina, is gathering information from witnesses, reviewing body camera footage and conducting interviews as part of the inquiry.

The Hardeeville Police Department and SLED are asking anyone who may have seen the events leading up to the shooting, or who has video or other information, to contact investigators. Public cooperation can help clarify what happened and support the ongoing review.

This was the fourth officer‑involved shooting reported in South Carolina so far this year, according to SLED officials. Each such incident undergoes a thorough review to ensure transparency and accountability, and to provide answers for families and the community.

Law enforcement agencies and community leaders expressed condolences to Holloway‑Caldwell’s family, underscoring the tragedy of a young life lost. As the investigation continues, residents in the area are encouraged to stay informed through official updates from SLED and local public safety offices.
