The Westwood community is mourning after a tragic accident at the 99 Ranch Market on Thursday, which left three people dead and six others injured. Authorities have now identified a second victim, Zih Dao, a 28-year-old man who, along with 42-year-old Deris Renoj and another person who has not yet been named, lost his life in the devastating crash. Two of those who died were employees of the grocery store, while the third was a customer.
According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, the incident began when an elderly woman driving a vehicle struck a bicyclist near the store and then continued on, ultimately crashing into the 99 Ranch Market. Some individuals were reportedly trapped under the vehicle before emergency responders were able to assist them. First responders quickly arrived at the scene to provide life-saving care, but tragically, three people were pronounced dead at the site.
Six additional people sustained injuries, with four requiring hospital treatment. Two men, both 35, were in critical condition, while two others, ages 37 and 38, were reported in fair condition. The bicyclist who was initially struck, along with the driver, declined medical treatment and did not go to the hospital.
Los Angeles police have stated that they do not believe the crash was intentional and are investigating whether a medical issue or loss of control may have caused the vehicle to strike the market. Fire department officials also confirmed that the crash is being treated as an accidental traffic collision, not a deliberate act.
The scene has left a lasting impact on witnesses and residents. One bystander described seeing the driver hit a cyclist and later watching emergency personnel perform CPR at the store. The event has prompted an outpouring of grief and support from the community, with residents leaving candles, flowers, and messages outside the store to honor the victims.
In a statement, 99 Ranch Market expressed heartbreak over the incident, offering condolences to the families of those who died and those affected by the crash. The store also emphasized that it is cooperating fully with law enforcement and first responders as the investigation continues. The statement read:
“Our deepest condolences go out to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives, and we are holding everyone affected—customers, team members, and the broader community—in our thoughts during this tough time.”
The Westwood location of 99 Ranch Market will remain closed while authorities continue their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. The community continues to process this tragic loss, reflecting on the lives of the victims and offering support to those impacted.
This heartbreaking event serves as a reminder of how quickly life can change and the importance of community support in times of tragedy. Residents and officials are urging patience as investigators gather information, and community members are encouraged to continue showing compassion, respect, and support for the families, employees, and others affected by this devastating incident.
