The Northport Police Department is investigating a fatal hit-and-run that occurred Thursday evening along Highway 43 North near the intersection of 93rd Street.
Officers were dispatched to the area at approximately 6:25 p.m. on January 25, 2026, after receiving a report of a person lying near the side of the roadway. Upon arrival, officers located a deceased male. Authorities later identified the victim as 72-year-old Willie Clay Fleming of Northport.
Preliminary findings indicate that Fleming had been struck by a vehicle that left the scene. Investigators believe the incident occurred between 6:20 p.m. and 6:40 p.m., a timeframe when traffic is typically heavy along that section of Highway 43.
The department’s Traffic Homicide Unit and Violent Crimes Unit are leading the investigation. Officials are working to gather evidence, review available surveillance, and determine the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Police are urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward. Drivers who were traveling in the area during the specified timeframe and have dash cameras are also encouraged to review their footage for any information that could assist investigators.
Authorities emphasized that community cooperation is critical in cases involving vehicles that leave the scene. Even small details may help investigators identify the driver involved.
