Law enforcement agencies have identified the suspect who died in a Wednesday officer-involved shooting in Wichita as 45-year-old Benjamin David Board, according to the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities say the incident began just after 9 a.m. when the U.S. Marshal’s Service and Wichita Police Department SWAT teams responded to an apartment in the 9200 block of East Harry. Board had an active warrant for eight counts of sexual exploitation of a child, officials reported.

Officers were aware that Board was armed and had reportedly stated he intended to engage officers in a “shootout” if confronted.

Around noon, Board exited the apartment, and officers attempted to take him into custody in the 8900 block of East Cherry Creek. Police confirmed their presence and informed him that he was under arrest. Board then produced a firearm, prompting one Wichita Police officer to discharge their weapon. Board was struck multiple times.

Emergency personnel attempted lifesaving measures at the scene, but Board was pronounced dead by responding medical teams. The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation into the officer-involved shooting to ensure an independent review of the events. No officers were reported injured in the incident.

Authorities stressed that the investigation remains active, and additional details will be provided as they become available. The incident highlights ongoing law enforcement efforts to apprehend individuals with serious criminal warrants while maintaining public safety.

Officials urge residents to remain aware of law enforcement activity in the area but emphasized that the situation was contained and posed no ongoing risk to the public.

Community members are reminded that officer-involved shooting investigations are conducted thoroughly to maintain transparency and accountability.

The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office and Wichita Police Department thanked responding officers and emergency medical personnel for their swift actions during the incident. Further updates will be released by officials after the conclusion of the ongoing investigation.

This case serves as a reminder of the challenges officers face when apprehending armed suspects with active warrants and the importance of procedural safety for both law enforcement and the public.

Authorities extend condolences to the family of the deceased while stressing that the investigation aims to clarify the events leading to the fatal shooting.

The public is encouraged to follow official Wichita Police and Sedgwick County Sheriff communications for verified information regarding this investigation.
