Authorities in Independence, Missouri, are investigating after a man died following a dog attack Wednesday afternoon.
The Independence Police Department reported that officers responded around 2:30 p.m. to a residence in a local neighborhood after receiving reports of a man being attacked by a dog. When officers arrived, the dog was actively attacking the victim.
According to police, one of the responding officers discharged their firearm due to the severity of the victim’s injuries. The dog reportedly continued to act aggressively toward officers and was shot again, resulting in the animal’s death.
Emergency responders provided care to the victim until an ambulance transported him to a nearby hospital. Authorities later confirmed that the victim, identified as Tyler Jones, died from injuries sustained in the attack. No other individuals were injured.
Investigators said the officers and animal control personnel had not previously visited the residence. Police are actively investigating the circumstances that led to the attack.
Family members described Jones as deeply devoted to his loved ones and expressed their grief. His mother, Carla Jones, shared that the attack happened suddenly while her son was playing with the dog and recalled his final words reflecting his faith.
Officials are reminding residents to exercise caution around unfamiliar or aggressive animals and to report any concerns to local authorities.
The Independence Police Department continues to investigate the incident, and additional information will be released as it becomes available.
