TOOELE COUNTY, Utah — Officials say a medical emergency may have played a role in a deadly rollover crash on Interstate 80 near Delle on Saturday afternoon, January 24.
According to the Utah Highway Patrol, the vehicle — a pickup truck traveling westbound — left the roadway near mile marker 70 shortly after 2 p.m. The truck re‑entered the highway several times, crossed all westbound lanes, and overturned on the shoulder.
Officials identified the driver as 76‑year‑old Taniela Kauvaka Hiva Patetefa of Salt Lake City. He died at the scene. A passenger told investigators that the driver had slumped over the wheel before the vehicle left the road, and authorities say that information has led them to consider a medical issue as a possible factor in the crash.
Two other people in the vehicle were reported to have survived the rollover and were in stable condition following the crash.
The Utah Department of Public Safety continues to gather information as part of the investigation.
