Officer Terry Bennett, a 32-year-old member of the department, died Thursday from injuries he sustained after being struck by a vehicle on Interstate 695 more than two weeks ago.
Police confirmed Officer Bennett’s passing shortly after midnight, noting that he had served with the department for nearly eight years. In a public statement, the department expressed deep sorrow and recognized his dedication to public service and community safety.
According to officials, the incident occurred around 10:10 p.m. on December 23, 2025. Officer Bennett was assisting a stranded motorist who had run out of fuel along I-695. While he was outside his patrol vehicle providing help, another vehicle struck him. Fellow officers quickly responded and provided emergency aid before he was transported to a hospital with severe injuries. He remained under medical care until his death.
Police said the driver involved in the crash was also injured and stayed at the scene before being taken to the hospital with injuries described as minor. The motorist Officer Bennett was assisting was not hurt. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and authorities have not released further details at this time.
Interim Police Chief Jeffery Carroll described Officer Bennett as a dedicated public servant who cared deeply about his community.
