Authorities are investigating a fatal head-on collision that occurred Sunday morning on U.S. Highway 177 in Garvin County.

According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, the crash involved two vehicles traveling in opposite directions along the highway. Troopers reported that one of the vehicles, driven by 39-year-old Steven J. Goodnight of Wanette, was traveling northbound when it crossed the center line for reasons that have not yet been determined.

Investigators say the vehicle then collided with a southbound vehicle driven by 52-year-old Michael L. Martin of Oklahoma City. Emergency responders arrived at the scene and provided assistance to both drivers.

Authorities confirmed that Goodnight sustained critical injuries and later died as a result of the crash. Martin was also injured and transported to a medical facility for treatment. Officials have not released details about his current condition.

Troopers noted that both drivers were wearing seatbelts at the time of the collision. No passengers were reported in either vehicle.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol stated that the cause of the crash remains under investigation. Officials are working to determine what factors may have contributed to the vehicle crossing into oncoming traffic.

Emergency crews responded promptly to the scene, and the roadway may have experienced temporary closures as investigators conducted their on-site review and cleared the area.

Authorities are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has relevant information to come forward to assist with the ongoing investigation. Public cooperation can be helpful in establishing a clearer understanding of the events.

Officials also reminded drivers to remain attentive on highways, especially on two-lane roads where crossing the center line can result in serious collisions. Maintaining focus and adhering to traffic laws are key to preventing similar incidents.

The case remains active, and additional information will be released as it becomes available.

Residents are encouraged to follow official updates from the Oklahoma Highway Patrol for accurate and verified information.

Authorities extended their condolences to those affected by the crash and emphasized the importance of road safety awareness for all drivers.
