According to the Dallas Police Department, the incident unfolded at the ICE field office in northwest Dallas at approximately 6:40 a.m. local time. Investigators say a suspect opened fire on the government building from an adjacent structure. Two individuals sustained gunshot wounds and were rushed to a nearby hospital, while another victim died at the scene.
The suspected shooter, whose name has not yet been released, was later found dead from what authorities described as a self-inflicted gunshot wound on the roof of a nearby building. Local media outlets reported that ammunition recovered at the scene included messages with anti-ICE rhetoric, suggesting the attack was deliberately aimed at the immigration agency.
Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux confirmed in a press briefing that the FBI has taken over the case and is treating it as an act of targeted violence. He noted that investigators are combing through the shooter’s belongings for further evidence, including writings that may reveal a motive.
The shooting created significant disruption in the area. Video footage from traffic cameras showed a normally busy freeway near the facility brought to a complete standstill, with six lanes shut down as dozens of emergency vehicles converged on the scene.
Reactions quickly poured in from federal and state officials. Vice President JD Vance condemned the incident on social media, calling it part of a disturbing pattern of hostility toward law enforcement, particularly immigration officers. “The obsessive attack on law enforcement, particularly ICE, must stop. I’m praying for everyone hurt in this attack and for their families,” Vance wrote. Texas Governor Greg Abbott also described the shooting as a direct assault on ICE personnel.
However, later updates clarified that no ICE agents were among the injured. Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin told Fox News that the victims were detainees, not agency employees. “Detainees were among the victims of the shooting,” McLaughlin said, while emphasizing that ICE personnel were unharmed.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding the shooter’s motive but noted that recent months have seen a rise in attacks directed at immigration officers and facilities.
The Dallas incident comes on the heels of other violent episodes targeting immigration enforcement in Texas. On July 4, a coordinated attack took place outside the Prairieland Detention Center in Alvarado, southwest of Dallas. In that case, assailants dressed in black tactical-style clothing opened fire, leaving a police officer injured after being shot in the neck. Federal prosecutors have since charged at least 11 individuals in connection with that assault.
Just days later, on July 7, another violent episode occurred in McAllen, Texas, where authorities said Ryan Louis Mosqueda opened fire with an assault rifle on federal agents as they were leaving a U.S. Border Patrol facility. Mosqueda injured a responding police officer before being killed by authorities. Investigators later found additional weapons inside his vehicle.
These incidents have heightened concerns among federal officials about the safety of immigration officers and facilities, as well as the growing trend of anti-ICE rhetoric turning into violent acts.
As of now, authorities continue to investigate the Dallas shooting to piece together the suspect’s background and intentions. The FBI and local law enforcement agencies have not released additional details, but they say the investigation remains ongoing. Meanwhile, families of the victims and the broader Dallas community are left grappling with the aftermath of yet another violent act tied to immigration enforcement.
