Authorities are investigating a fatal tractor-trailer accident on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge‑Tunnel that occurred Sunday morning. According to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel Police, the incident happened around 6:30 a.m. on the west side of the southbound span, just south of Fisherman’s Island. No other vehicles were involved.
The tractor-trailer involved was operated by Perdue. Officials confirmed that the driver, 61-year-old Ronnie Andrews of Robersonville, North Carolina, died in the crash.
Perdue released a statement expressing sorrow over the loss: “We are heartbroken to confirm that a Perdue driver has passed away following an accident on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge‑Tunnel. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with his family, friends, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. He had been a valued member of our team, and his loss will be deeply felt across our organization.” The company is fully cooperating with investigators.
Officials reported that the bridge sustained damage to the guardrail and curb. Emergency repairs have been made, but a single southbound lane remains open while maintenance crews complete further work, which is expected to take several days.
The U.S. Coast Guard and Virginia Beach Marine Police assisted in the search and recovery efforts at the scene. Authorities noted that weather conditions were not a factor; skies were clear, winds were mild at around 15 mph, and visibility was good.
The Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel Police continue to investigate the circumstances of the crash to determine how the vehicle went overboard.
Drivers traveling through the area are advised to expect lane closures and exercise caution. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
