Authorities are searching for information after a fatal hit-and-run crash involving a pedestrian early Friday morning in Bedford County.

According to the Virginia State Police, the crash occurred at approximately 12:29 a.m. on March 6, 2026, along Waterlick Road near the intersection with Valleywood Drive.

Investigators say a sport utility vehicle believed to be a 2019–2021 Ford Expedition was traveling eastbound when it left the right side of the roadway. Authorities report the vehicle first struck a mailbox before hitting a pedestrian along the roadway.

Police said the driver did not stop after the collision and left the area without reporting the incident.

The pedestrian has been identified as 57-year-old Robert Lee Dresser Jr. of Thaxton. Officials say he was pronounced dead at the scene.

State Police believe the suspect vehicle may have noticeable damage, including to the passenger-side grille and a missing passenger-side mirror. Investigators are asking the public to be alert for any vehicle matching that description.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has information about the vehicle involved is encouraged to contact the Virginia State Police tip line.

Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing as they work to identify the driver and determine the full circumstances surrounding the crash.

Incidents like this highlight the importance of drivers staying at the scene of a crash and reporting it immediately so that emergency responders can provide assistance and investigators can gather accurate information.

As the search continues for the vehicle involved, what more can communities do to help law enforcement solve hit-and-run cases and improve pedestrian safety?
