A tragic crash in Rusk County on Saturday evening resulted in the decease of a 21-year-old man and a young child, authorities confirmed.
The Texas Department of Public Safety reported that troopers responded around 6:30 p.m. to the 7400 block of State Highway 323, northwest of Henderson, after a single-vehicle collision. Investigators said the vehicle was traveling north when the driver attempted to pass another car in a no-passing zone. The vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree.
The driver, identified as 21-year-old River Burks of Troup, and a 2-year-old passenger were pronounced dead at the scene. A second child, aged 6, was critically injured and airlifted to a hospital in Shreveport, Louisiana, for treatment. Authorities have not released the names of the children.
DPS officials said the crash remains under investigation, and details regarding the relationship between the driver and the children have not been confirmed.
