A 73-year-old man from Hazelhurst has died following an incident involving a vehicle on the Willow Flowage, according to the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities said deputies received a report Tuesday that Randall Bernau had been struck by a truck while on the ice during severe winter weather conditions. Investigators determined the truck had become stuck in heavy snow amid whiteout conditions on the frozen flowage.
According to the sheriff’s office, Bernau was attempting to assist the driver by standing on the vehicle’s bumper to help improve traction. At some point during the effort, he fell from the bumper. As the driver, identified as Jeffrey Larson of Irma, attempted to maneuver the vehicle, Bernau was run over.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene and provided assistance. Despite their efforts, Bernau died as a result of his injuries.
The sheriff’s office stated that alcohol and reckless behavior were not factors in the incident. Officials described the event as a tragic accident and confirmed that no charges will be referred to the district attorney’s office.
Multiple agencies assisted at the scene, including the Little Rice Fire Department and the Oneida County Ambulance Service.
Authorities remind residents to use extreme caution when traveling on frozen waterways, particularly during periods of reduced visibility and heavy snowfall.
