Authorities have confirmed that two men from Roseville, California, lost their lives following a boating accident on the Colorado River earlier this week. The incident occurred near Topock Gorge, located north of Lake Havasu, and is currently under investigation.
According to the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office Division of Boating Safety, emergency crews were called to the scene at approximately 4:50 p.m. on Tuesday after reports of a collision involving a boat. First responders from multiple agencies, including fire departments from nearby areas, arrived quickly and provided emergency assistance.
The victims have been identified as 33-year-old Noah Welch and 53-year-old James Rutherford Jr. One of the men was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other was airlifted by medical helicopter to a hospital for treatment. Despite medical efforts, he later passed away.
Preliminary findings indicate that the vessel involved, a 25-foot custom boat, was traveling northbound on the river at a high speed when it lost control. Investigators say the boat struck the rocky shoreline on the Arizona side before eventually coming to rest among reeds along the California shoreline.
Officials have stated that the exact cause of the crash remains under investigation. However, speed is being considered as a possible contributing factor. Authorities are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident, including environmental conditions and any other elements that may have played a role.
The tragedy has deeply affected the local community, as both individuals were residents of Roseville. Authorities have expressed their condolences to the families and loved ones impacted by the incident.
As the investigation continues, officials are reminding boaters of the importance of safety while on the water. They encourage individuals to remain aware of their surroundings, adhere to speed guidelines, and ensure that all safety precautions are followed to help prevent similar incidents.
Authorities are also urging anyone who may have witnessed the accident or has relevant information to come forward. Public cooperation can play a key role in helping investigators better understand what happened.
This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the potential dangers associated with water activities and the importance of responsible boating practices.
