Authorities in San Diego have identified a woman who died after being found unresponsive inside an apartment last weekend. Police say the case remains under investigation as legal proceedings move forward.

According to the San Diego Police Department, officers responded around 4 a.m. Saturday to an apartment in the 4300 block of 54th Street after a man called to report that his girlfriend was unconscious. When officers arrived, they located 35-year-old Nancy Del Alto inside the residence.

Police said Del Alto was transported to a nearby hospital by paramedics, where she was later pronounced deceased.

Investigators questioned her boyfriend, 38-year-old Jose Manuel Castaneda, at the scene. Authorities later arrested him on suspicion of causing the fatal injuries. Prosecutors have since filed a murder charge in connection with the case.

During a court appearance Wednesday afternoon, Castaneda entered a plea of not guilty to the charge. Court records indicate that he remains in custody without bail while the case proceeds through the legal system.

Family members told local media that Del Alto and Castaneda had been in a relationship for several years. Relatives said they had grown concerned in recent years as they noticed changes in communication and contact with her.

The family is now calling for accountability as the legal process continues. They have also organized a fundraiser to assist with funeral expenses.

Authorities emphasize that the investigation remains active and that further details may be released as the case develops. Police have not provided additional information about the circumstances leading up to the incident.

Officials also remind the public that anyone experiencing or witnessing domestic violence situations is encouraged to seek help and reach out to trusted support services.

As the investigation continues, how can communities better support individuals facing difficult or unsafe situations at home?
