Chesterfield police are investigating a fatal crash that occurred early Monday morning at the intersection of Newbys Bridge Road and Newbys Mill Drive.
Officers responded around 5:21 a.m. following reports of a collision involving injuries. Upon arrival, they learned that 58-year-old Michael F. Ortiz had been found in the roadway near a bicycle, according to authorities.
Police say that as a bystander attempted to check on Ortiz, a southbound vehicle struck him. A second vehicle later collided with the first, but officials confirmed it did not make contact with Ortiz.
Ortiz was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, authorities said.
Investigators noted that it remains unclear how Ortiz initially came to be in the roadway, though they believe he had been riding a bicycle prior to the incident.
All drivers involved stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators.
The crash remains under investigation, and police are asking anyone with information to come forward.
