Authorities in Allen County have identified the man who died in a multi-vehicle crash last week at the intersection of O’Day Road and West Washington Center Road.
According to the Allen County Coroner’s Office, the victim was 21-year-old Matthew David Jones of Fort Wayne. Officials ruled his decease accidental. The incident marks the fourth traffic-related fatality reported in Allen County so far this year.
The Allen County Sheriff’s Department said the crash occurred around 4 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 27. Investigators reported that a cement pumper truck was traveling west on Washington Center Road while a pickup truck was heading east on the same roadway.
Authorities say a separate vehicle traveling south on O’Day Road stopped at the intersection’s stop sign before entering the roadway. According to deputies, the vehicle then pulled into the path of the cement truck.
Investigators said the driver of the truck attempted to avoid a collision by swerving. However, the maneuver resulted in the truck striking both the oncoming pickup truck and the vehicle that had entered the intersection.
Jones, who was driving the pickup truck, died as a result of the crash, officials confirmed.
Two occupants of the other vehicle—an elderly man and woman—were transported to a local hospital for treatment. Authorities reported that the man was in stable condition, while the woman remained in critical condition at the time of the latest update.
Officials also stated that the driver of the cement truck was not injured in the incident.
The crash remains under review as investigators continue examining the circumstances that led to the collision.
As traffic volumes continue to grow across the region, how can drivers stay more alert and cautious at busy intersections to help prevent similar tragedies?
