Marcel Israel Benavides Death News – Authorities are investigating a fatal traffic collision that occurred Tuesday morning on Highway 154 in Yamhill County, resulting in the death of one driver.
According to the Oregon State Police, the crash took place at approximately 8:45 a.m. near the intersection of Highway 154 and Amity Road. Troopers were dispatched to the area after receiving reports of a serious collision involving a passenger vehicle and a commercial truck.
Investigators said a Kia Spectra traveling southbound on the highway crossed the center line for reasons that have not yet been determined. The vehicle then collided with a semi-truck that was heading northbound. Emergency responders arrived quickly, but the driver of the passenger vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene.
The victim was identified as 35-year-old Marcel Israel Benavides of Dayton. Authorities did not release additional medical details, noting that the circumstances surrounding the crash are still under review. The driver of the semi-truck was not injured, according to state police, and remained at the scene following the collision.
Highway 154 was closed for approximately four hours while crews worked to investigate the crash and clear the roadway. Traffic was diverted during that time, and motorists were advised to seek alternate routes until the highway reopened.
Several local agencies assisted in the response and investigation. In addition to Oregon State Police, support was provided by the Yamhill County Sheriff’s Office, Dayton Fire & Rescue, Lafayette Fire & Rescue, the McMinnville Fire District, and the Oregon Department of Transportation. These agencies helped manage traffic, provide emergency services, and ensure the area was safe for travelers.
Officials said the investigation will include a review of roadway conditions, vehicle positions, and any other factors that may have contributed to the collision. At this time, police have not said whether weather, speed, or mechanical issues played a role. No citations or charges have been announced, and investigators emphasized that it is too early to draw conclusions.
Crashes involving large commercial vehicles can lead to significant traffic disruptions and serious outcomes. Law enforcement often reminds drivers to remain alert, stay within their lanes, and exercise caution on two-lane highways where opposing traffic is separated only by a center line.
Community members expressed sadness following news of the crash, and officials extended condolences to the family and friends of Benavides. Authorities acknowledged the impact that such incidents have on loved ones and the broader community.
Oregon State Police said they will release additional information if it becomes available as the investigation continues. In the meantime, drivers are encouraged to remain patient and cautious while traveling through rural highways and intersections, especially during morning commute hours.
The investigation into the Highway 154 crash remains ongoing.
