Authorities say a Missouri man died Friday following a scuba diving incident in the Florida Keys.
According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, the victim has been identified as 71-year-old Lonnie Lee Higgins of Columbia, Missouri. Officials reported that Higgins had been diving at the well-known Eagle shipwreck site located off the coast of Islamorada.
Investigators say commercial divers in the area responded after Higgins was discovered on the ocean floor at a depth of approximately 110 feet. Divers recovered him from the water and brought him back to a nearby vessel.
Members of the U.S. Coast Guard assisted at the scene and began performing CPR and other emergency medical efforts while transporting Higgins back toward shore. He was later taken to a hospital for further medical care.
Despite those efforts, authorities confirmed that Higgins was pronounced dead at the hospital. Officials with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office stated that there is currently no indication of foul play in the incident. As with many cases involving unexpected deaths, investigators are continuing to review the circumstances surrounding the event.
An autopsy has been scheduled to help determine the exact cause of decease, and authorities say the results will provide additional clarity once completed.
