Authorities in Homewood have announced charges in connection with a March 22 crash that resulted in the death of a 14-year-old boy.
According to Homewood police, emergency crews responded to the intersection of 183rd Street and Governors Highway after receiving reports of a multi-vehicle collision. Officers and fire personnel, along with assisting agencies, arrived at the scene and began assessing those involved.
Investigators said a gray Chevrolet Equinox traveling southbound left the roadway and struck two vehicles that were stopped at the intersection. The impact involved a Buick Park Avenue and a Nissan Rogue, both of which were waiting at the time.
Police identified the driver of the Equinox as 36-year-old Ryan Barbour. Authorities reported that he left the scene on foot but was quickly located by officers nearby. He was treated for minor injuries and transported to a local hospital.
Officials said the occupants of the other vehicles sustained minor injuries and were also taken to hospitals for evaluation and treatment.
A 14-year-old passenger in one of the vehicles, later identified as Kyran Smith by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office, was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not released additional details regarding the circumstances of the crash beyond the initial findings.
On April 1, Barbour was taken into custody and formally charged. According to police, the charges include aggravated driving under the influence resulting in death, reckless homicide involving a motor vehicle, excessive speeding, and improper lane usage.
Officials confirmed that Barbour remains in custody pending a court appearance scheduled at the Markham Courthouse. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to review evidence and determine the full sequence of events leading up to the crash.
Community members and school officials have expressed condolences, remembering the young victim as a positive presence among his peers.
Law enforcement officials emphasized the importance of safe driving practices and noted that incidents like this highlight the serious consequences of unsafe behavior on the road.
