Homewood police are investigating a multi-vehicle crash that occurred Sunday night at the intersection of Governor’s Highway and 183rd Street.
According to authorities, a Chevrolet SUV driven by a 36-year-old man was traveling southbound when it left the roadway for reasons that remain unclear. The vehicle then struck several others at the intersection.
Among those involved was a Nissan SUV occupied by a 27-year-old driver and a 14-year-old passenger. Police identified the teen as Kyran Smith of Homewood. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Nissan driver was transported to a nearby hospital with injuries described as minor. Police said the Chevrolet also collided with a Buick sedan. Both occupants in that vehicle were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
Authorities reported that the driver of the Chevrolet attempted to leave the scene on foot but was quickly taken into custody by responding officers.
No information has been released regarding possible charges at this time. The investigation remains ongoing.
