Authorities are investigating a fatal snowmobile accident that occurred Sunday afternoon in Stannard, Vermont. The Vermont State Police reported that the incident involved 62-year-old Kevin Smith of Chester, Connecticut.
Smith was riding a Bombardier Ski-Doo along VAST Trail 513 around 3:12 p.m. when he drifted slightly off the north side of the trail and struck a stump.
Police said that after striking the obstacle, Smith temporarily lost control of the snowmobile, which tipped over and resulted in him being thrown into nearby trees. Emergency responders attempted life-saving measures, but Smith was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Investigators indicated that neither speed nor alcohol appeared to be factors in the crash. Authorities also confirmed that Smith was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.
No additional details about the incident were immediately available. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash to provide a clearer understanding of what occurred.
Officials reminded snowmobile operators to exercise caution while riding, follow trail guidelines, and remain alert to obstacles, especially in wooded or uneven terrain. Updates will be provided if further information is released by the Vermont State Police.
