Authorities are investigating a fatal single-vehicle crash that occurred early Saturday morning in Wilkes County.
According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, troopers responded around 6:28 a.m. to Dav Road near J. Harrold Drive after receiving reports of a crash. Emergency crews arrived to find a vehicle that had left the roadway.
Preliminary findings indicate that a 2005 Honda Element was traveling westbound when it veered off the right side of the road. Officials say the vehicle struck a roadside structure and overturned before coming to a stop.
The driver, identified as 22-year-old Kailey Marie Everette of North Wilkesboro, was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities noted that she was the sole occupant of the vehicle. Investigators reported that the driver was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. No other vehicles were involved in the incident.
According to troopers, impairment does not appear to have been a contributing factor. However, speed is believed to have played a role in the crash based on preliminary evidence gathered at the scene.
The roadway was temporarily closed for approximately two hours while emergency responders assisted and investigators conducted their on-site review. Traffic has since returned to normal.
Officials confirmed that no charges will be filed in connection with the crash. The case remains under review as authorities complete their investigation and finalize their findings.
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is reminding drivers of the importance of seatbelt use and safe driving practices. Wearing a seatbelt and maintaining appropriate speeds can significantly reduce the risk of serious injury in the event of a crash.
Authorities are continuing to gather information to better understand the sequence of events leading up to the incident. Updates will be provided if additional details become available.
Residents are encouraged to follow official channels for accurate information and to remain cautious when traveling on local roadways, particularly during early morning hours.
Officials also expressed condolences to the family and those affected by the loss, asking for privacy during this difficult time. This incident highlights the importance of road safety awareness and responsible driving as key factors in preventing similar tragedies.
