Authorities are investigating a deadly crash that occurred early Monday morning along Interstate 69 near Gaston, leaving one man dead and two others injured. According to the Grant County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to reports of a crash around 6:30 a.m. near mile-marker 247. When officers arrived at the scene, they located a man who had sustained critical injuries.

Officials later identified the victim as 45-year-old Joseph A. Kidwell of Marion. Emergency responders assessed the situation, but authorities confirmed that Kidwell was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators said two additional people involved in the crash suffered injuries and were transported to nearby hospitals for medical treatment. Officials have not released details about the extent of their injuries.

Preliminary information from deputies indicates that Kidwell and his wife had been traveling in a 1996 Chevrolet truck that had become disabled on the side of the interstate. Authorities believe the vehicle was stopped along the roadway when the incident occurred.

According to investigators, a 2011 Chevrolet truck traveling in the same area attempted to pass a tractor-trailer. During the maneuver, the vehicle reportedly veered off the roadway and struck the disabled truck. Emergency crews responded quickly to secure the area and assist those involved. Traffic in the area was affected for a period of time while first responders worked at the scene and investigators documented the crash.

Officials say incidents involving vehicles stopped along busy highways can be especially dangerous due to the speed of passing traffic and limited space for drivers to react. Law enforcement agencies often remind motorists to move over for vehicles stopped along roadways whenever possible and to remain alert when driving near the shoulder of highways.

The crash remains under active investigation as deputies work to determine the full sequence of events and any contributing factors. Authorities have not released additional information at this time but say further details may become available as the investigation continues.

Community members have expressed concern about highway safety following the incident, particularly when vehicles become disabled along high-speed roadways. As the investigation moves forward, officials are urging drivers to remain cautious, especially on busy interstates where quick decisions and changing traffic conditions can create hazardous situations.

What precautions do you think drivers should take when approaching vehicles stopped on the side of a busy highway?
