Authorities in Georgia are investigating the decease of a 34-year-old man following a law enforcement response to a reported domestic incident, officials said.
According to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to a residence on James Drive at approximately 8 p.m. Sunday after receiving a call related to a domestic situation. When deputies arrived, they began assessing the scene and attempting to manage the situation.
During the response, officials said deputies attempted to take a man, identified as Jonathan Aaron McElroy, into custody. The sheriff’s office reported that McElroy did not comply with instructions, and a conducted energy device, commonly referred to as a Taser, was used during the encounter.
Authorities stated that shortly after the device was deployed, McElroy became unresponsive. Deputies and emergency personnel provided assistance at the scene before transporting him to a nearby hospital for further medical care.
Richmond County Coroner Mark Bowen confirmed that McElroy was later pronounced dead at 12:01 a.m. Monday. Officials have not released a preliminary cause of decease.
The coroner’s office has scheduled an autopsy to determine the exact cause and manner of decease. Findings from the examination are expected to provide additional clarity regarding the circumstances surrounding the incident.
In line with standard procedure for cases involving use of force, the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office said the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office regional use-of-force team has been notified. That agency will lead an independent investigation into the events.
Authorities emphasized that the review process will include a detailed examination of the deputies’ actions, evidence from the scene, and any available witness accounts. Officials say the goal is to ensure a transparent and thorough assessment.
