Authorities in Hall County say an 18-year-old is facing multiple charges following an incident that resulted in the death of a high school teacher late Friday night.
According to the Hall County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded around 11:40 p.m. to a residence on North Gate Drive after reports of an incident involving several individuals outside a home. Investigators said a group of teenagers had gathered near the residence of a teacher from North Hall High School.
Authorities report that the group was involved in a prank that included placing toilet paper in trees outside the home. When the homeowner, identified as 40-year-old Jason Hughes, came outside, the individuals attempted to leave the area in two vehicles.

Officials say that as one of the vehicles, a pickup truck driven by Jayden Ryan Wallace, began leaving the scene, Hughes fell in the roadway and was struck by the vehicle. The group reportedly stopped afterward and attempted to help before emergency responders arrived.
Hughes was transported to a hospital by local emergency crews but later died from his injuries, according to authorities.
Investigators say Wallace has been charged with first-degree vehicular homicide, reckless driving, criminal trespass, and littering. Four other individuals who were present have also been charged with criminal trespass and littering.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue reviewing the circumstances surrounding the incident.
In a statement, Will Schofield said the school community is mourning the loss of Hughes, describing him as a devoted teacher, mentor, and coach who made a lasting impact on students and colleagues.
Community members, students, and former graduates have shared memories of Hughes, highlighting his dedication to education and mentorship both inside and outside the classroom.
As the community reflects on the tragedy, many are asking an important question: how can young people and communities better understand the risks of late-night pranks and ensure situations don’t escalate into tragedy?
