Authorities in Texas say a Wisconsin man was fatally shot by law enforcement following a high-speed pursuit that began at a U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint.

The man has been identified as 33-year-old James McMillan of Greenfield, Wisconsin. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the incident occurred around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Sierra Blanca checkpoint, located in the Big Bend Sector between El Paso and Van Horn.

Officials reported that a Border Patrol drug detection K9 alerted to McMillan’s vehicle, prompting agents to request a secondary search. Instead of stopping, McMillan allegedly sped away, initiating a pursuit. Authorities say that during the chase, he fired from the vehicle, prompting officers to return fire.

Troopers eventually used a PIT maneuver to stop McMillan’s vehicle. After the vehicle was stopped, authorities said McMillan barricaded himself inside and pointed a weapon toward officers, who then fired, resulting in his death.

Law enforcement confirmed that no officers or civilians were injured during the incident. Investigators also reported that the vehicle McMillan was driving had been stolen in Arizona.

Officials continue to review the circumstances surrounding the case. Multiple agencies are involved in the investigation, and authorities emphasize that all information released is preliminary.

The incident underscores the dangers law enforcement can encounter during vehicle pursuits and checkpoints, particularly when firearms are involved. Authorities continue to urge the public to follow traffic and law enforcement instructions to ensure safety in such situations.

As the investigation proceeds, what steps can be taken to balance public safety and law enforcement procedures during high-risk pursuits?
