Authorities in Coronado have identified a man who died following a traffic collision earlier this week, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner.
Officials confirmed that 78-year-old James Joseph Berta was involved in a collision while riding his bicycle on Tuesday afternoon. The incident occurred shortly after 1:30 p.m. along Silver Strand, also known as State Route 78, near the intersection with Tulagi Road.
The location is situated close to the Naval Amphibious Base Coronado and south of the Hotel del Coronado, a well-known area in the coastal community.
According to authorities, Berta was traveling southbound when his bicycle and an SUV came into contact at the intersection. Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after the collision and provided assistance.
Officials reported that despite efforts by both responding officers and the driver of the vehicle involved, Berta could not be revived. The medical examiner’s office later confirmed that he died that same day.
Preliminary findings released by investigators indicate that neither alcohol nor drugs are believed to have contributed to the incident. Authorities have not announced any charges and have not released additional details about the circumstances leading up to the collision.
The investigation remains ongoing as officials continue to review the events surrounding the crash. Authorities have not indicated whether any further updates will be released.
