Gerardo Garcia Obituary, Death News – Authorities are continuing to investigate a late-night two-vehicle crash in Upton County that claimed the life of a Midland man. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), the collision happened shortly before midnight on Friday, October 10, along State Highway 349 near mile marker 376.

Preliminary reports indicate that the crash involved a 2003 Cadillac Escalade towing a trailer and a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado. Investigators said the Escalade, driven by 48-year-old Steven Paul Latzel of Midkiff, had been parked on the shoulder of the highway before attempting to reenter traffic. As the driver made the turn, the vehicle reportedly moved into the path of the oncoming Silverado.

The Silverado, driven by 38-year-old Gerardo Garcia of Midland, collided with the trailer being towed by the Escalade. The impact caused significant damage to both vehicles. Despite wearing a seatbelt, Garcia sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene by first responders.

Officials reported that Latzel was not hurt in the crash. No other vehicles were involved, and there were no additional passengers in either vehicle at the time.

Emergency personnel from Upton County, including DPS troopers and local firefighters, responded quickly to the scene. Traffic along the section of State Highway 349 was temporarily delayed as crews worked to clear the wreckage and conduct an initial investigation.

The Texas Department of Public Safety noted that the crash remains under active review as investigators work to determine the precise sequence of events and contributing factors. So far, authorities have not said whether any citations will be issued or if further action will be taken.

Officials emphasized that weather and road conditions were clear at the time of the accident. They also noted that no signs of impairment have been reported at this stage of the investigation, though a full analysis will be conducted as part of standard procedure.

Gerardo Garcia, the driver who lost his life, was a resident of Midland and described by those who knew him as a hardworking and friendly individual. His passing has left a deep impact on friends, relatives, and members of the local community. Many have expressed shock over the sudden tragedy, especially given that he was following traffic rules and wearing a seatbelt.

Investigators say crashes like this one highlight the importance of cautious decision-making when entering or crossing traffic lanes, particularly on highways where vehicles travel at higher speeds. DPS officials continue to remind drivers to ensure that roadways are clear before merging or turning and to use extra care when pulling out from shoulders or side roads.

The Texas Department of Public Safety will complete a full report once all details are verified. The findings will include vehicle conditions, roadway measurements, and witness statements, all of which will help determine what led to the fatal event.

Authorities extended their condolences to Garcia’s family and loved ones as they navigate this difficult time. The investigation remains ongoing, and officials have not provided a timeline for when more information will be released.

This marks another serious crash on State Highway 349, a route known for heavy traffic between Midland and nearby rural communities. State and local officials continue to encourage motorists to remain attentive and drive safely, especially during nighttime hours when visibility is reduced.

As of now, no further updates have been provided by DPS, but investigators assure the public that they are working diligently to bring clarity to the incident and to help prevent similar tragedies in the future.
