Gary Cooney Obituary, Death – Authorities in Delaware are conducting an investigation into a traffic incident that resulted in one person’s passing following a collision late Friday morning in Millsboro.

According to a report from the Delaware State Police, the incident occurred around 11:00 a.m. on October 24 along Millsboro Highway, west of Mumford Road. A Mazda CX-5 had stopped in the westbound lane, waiting to make a left turn into a private driveway.

As the Mazda began turning, an Oldsmobile Ciera, which had been traveling behind it, attempted to pass the Mazda on the left. In an effort to avoid a crash, the Oldsmobile’s driver swerved left, veered off the edge of the road, and struck two trash receptacles before making contact with the left side of the Mazda. The impact caused the Mazda to be pushed into a nearby tree.

Emergency crews quickly arrived at the scene to assist the individuals involved. The driver of the Mazda, a 69-year-old woman from Millsboro, was taken to a nearby hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening. After receiving medical attention, she was later released.

Her passenger, identified as 73-year-old Gary Cooney of Millsboro, was also transported to a local hospital with more serious injuries. Despite medical efforts, authorities confirmed that he passed away the following day, Saturday, October 25, as a result of the injuries sustained in the collision.

The driver of the Oldsmobile, a 34-year-old Millsboro man, did not sustain any injuries. Authorities have not yet released his name as the investigation remains active.

The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to review evidence and witness statements to determine the full sequence of events that led to the crash. Factors such as driver behavior, vehicle movement, and roadway conditions are being carefully examined. At this time, no charges have been announced, and investigators are still gathering details to understand what may have caused the incident.

Officials are encouraging anyone who witnessed the collision or who may have additional information to come forward. Troopers have asked those with relevant details to reach out to Master Corporal R. Albert at (302) 703-3266. Information can also be provided through a private Facebook message to the Delaware State Police or anonymously via Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-847-3333.

Local residents in Millsboro have expressed sympathy and support for the families affected by the event. Community members described the area of Millsboro Highway as a busy stretch that requires caution, especially during daylight hours when traffic tends to increase.

The Delaware State Police are once again reminding drivers to remain attentive behind the wheel, avoid risky maneuvers such as passing on the left when another vehicle is making a turn, and always maintain safe following distances. Even a brief lapse in judgment can lead to serious outcomes, officials emphasized.

Investigators are expected to provide an update once their findings are complete. For now, the focus remains on understanding how the crash occurred and ensuring that any contributing factors are properly addressed to help prevent similar incidents in the future.
