According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the incident was reported around 8 p.m. along Meridian Road, east of Revilla Drive, in an unincorporated area of the county. Investigators say a Volkswagen sedan was traveling westbound when it left the roadway and collided with a tree.
The vehicle was occupied by an adult driver and three young passengers, all believed to be from the Castroville area. Emergency responders arrived at the scene and provided assistance to those involved before transporting them to nearby medical facilities for treatment.
Authorities confirmed that a 16-year-old passenger, identified as Edgar Jeremiah Banuelos-Gonzalez of Watsonville, did not survive the crash. The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office released his identity following notification of family members.
The driver, a 37-year-old man, sustained serious injuries and was taken to a local hospital. Two additional passengers, ages 14 and 7, were also transported to a hospital in San Jose for treatment. Officials have reported that their injuries are considered moderate, and they are receiving care.
As part of the ongoing investigation, authorities are reviewing factors that may have contributed to the crash. Preliminary findings suggest that speed may have played a role. Officials also indicated that alcohol impairment is being considered as part of the investigation.
Law enforcement has taken the driver into custody in connection with the incident. Authorities have not released further details as the case continues to develop.
The California Highway Patrol is leading the investigation and is working to gather all relevant information, including evidence from the scene and statements from witnesses. Officials are encouraging anyone who may have information about the crash to come forward to assist investigators.
